Pergola cost tracks material more closely than almost any other outdoor build, because the structure is most of what you can see. These are installed per-square-foot ranges across our five counties.

Fiberglass spans long distances without a post in the middle. Wolf and Deckorators are premium clad systems with long warranties and colour matching to your deck.
Treat these as planning ranges, not quotes. Footing type, attachment to the house, post count, span, roof style and any louvered or motorised system all move the final number — and difficult access or a sloped yard moves it again. Four stages, and the permit is the one to plan around.
Most New Jersey municipalities treat a pergola as a permitted accessory structure, and the rules are not uniform — an attached pergola and a freestanding one are reviewed differently, and so are two towns in the same county.
Site visit & design
Adam looks at where the sun sits, how you use the space, and what the house can carry. You get a configuration, a material recommendation and a written quote.
Setbacks & permit
Rear and side setbacks and lot coverage limits decide where the pergola can legally sit — this is the constraint that most often changes a design. We prepare the drawings and file.
Footings & frame
Footings go to frost depth, posts are sized for snow load and wind exposure, then the frame and roof go up. Louvered systems are set and commissioned on site.
Inspection & handover
The town inspects, we walk the finished structure with you, and you get shown how any motorised roof and lighting actually works.

Three decisions shape a pergola: where it sits, how much shade you want, and whether you want that shade to change.
Attached to the house
Extends a kitchen or living room straight out onto a patio or deck. Reads as part of the house, and shades the rooms behind it through the afternoon.
Freestanding
Sits anywhere — over a pool, a fire pit, a dining table at the far end of the yard. Gives you a destination rather than an extension.
Fixed slats
A traditional pergola with fixed rafters gives dappled shade that moves through the day. Simple, quiet, and the least to go wrong.
Louvered roof
Adjustable slats close against rain and open for sun. More money, considerably more use — and with a motor, it is a button rather than a job.

What pergola material should I choose?
Aluminium is virtually maintenance-free and modern; cedar gives a warm, natural look but needs periodic sealing; vinyl sits between the two on price and needs nothing. Wolf and Deckorators are premium clad systems with long warranties. We spec against your house, your exposure and your budget rather than pushing one system.
Can you build a motorised louvered pergola?
Yes — louvered-roof pergolas are one of our most popular builds. The roof opens for sun and closes against rain at the push of a button, which turns a fair-weather structure into something you use most of the year.
Do pergolas need a permit in NJ?
Usually yes. Most municipalities treat a pergola as a permitted accessory structure, and waterfront or larger builds can trigger additional zoning review. Attached and freestanding pergolas are often reviewed differently. We handle the drawings, the permit and the inspections.
How much does a pergola cost?
Installed ranges run roughly $38 to $108 per square foot depending on material, with most of our builds landing in the cedar and aluminium range. Span, post count, roof style and any motorised system move the number, so treat published ranges as planning figures and get a quote for your own dimensions.
Attached or freestanding — which is better?
Neither is better; they solve different problems. An attached pergola extends a room out onto a patio or deck and shades the house behind it. A freestanding one gives you a destination somewhere else in the yard — over a pool, a fire pit or a dining area. Setbacks sometimes make the decision for you.
Can a pergola go over an existing deck or patio?
Yes, and it is a common request. What we check first is whether the existing structure can carry the posts and what is underneath for footings. On a deck that often means tying into the frame rather than landing on the boards.
Will a pergola hold up to snow and coastal wind?
It will if it is engineered for it. Snow load and wind exposure determine post sizing and footing depth, and near the water that is a real design input rather than a formality. Materials matter too — aluminium and clad systems do not rust or rot at the shore.
How long does a pergola take to build?
The build itself is typically short — often a matter of days on site once footings are in and materials have arrived. Permit review is the variable part and differs considerably between municipalities. We will tell you what your town is currently running when we quote.
